Celebrity donor makes R1.1 million pledge to Chest

Power couple, Vivian Reddy and Sorisha Naidoo

Celebrity business couple Vivian Reddy and Sorisha Naidoo caused quite a stir at the Community Chest’s inaugural VIP High Tea last Friday when Reddy pledged R1 million for the Chest to expand the Generation@ School Leadership Programme.

The businessman had earlier in the morning pledged R100 000 to the Chest, helping the organisation, together with other donors, reach its R4 million target for the 2014/2015 financial year. Community Chest executive director Michael Deegan presented guests at the High Tea with an overview of the various projects the organisation was involved with, including the Chet’s Generation@ School Leadership Project.elebrity business couple Vivian Reddy and Sorisha Naidoo caused quite a stir at the Community Chest’s inaugural VIP High Tea last Friday when Reddy pledged R1 million for the Chest to expand the Generation@ School Leadership Programme.

The school project certainly caught the attention of the power couple with Naidoo in her address thanking Community Chest for its outreach work and hinting that her husband Vivian had another announcement to make.

Reddy’s announcement of a further R1 million to Community Chest to expand Generation@ was as unexpected as it was magnanimous with several Chest staff and board members visibly emotional at the amount pledged by the Vivian Reddy Foundation. Community Chest Executive Director Michael Deegan described the pledge as “overwhelming” saying the Generation@ project would now be named the Vivian Reddy Foundation Generation@ School Leadership Project.““Community Chest is overwhelmed by the philanthropic generosity of the Vivian Reddy Foundation. People at the event on Friday were very emotional. We were completely overwhelmed by the magnanimity of the pledge. This enables us to select 11 schools and provide life skills that will change the school from top to bottom and produce future leaders for the country,” said Deegan.

Each Generation@ School Project costs approximately R100 000 and the funds from the Vivian Reddy Foundation will be R200 000 for the next five years covering 10 schools in and around Pietermaritzburg & surrounding areas.

The R1 million rand pledge added to the lavish atmosphere event organiser Charmaine Charles had set out to create at the VIP High Tea with all the guests being spoilt with gifts and treats and enabling the Chest to reach its R4 million financial year target. R3.2 million of the funds raised will be allocated to 71 beneficiaries to cover their operating costs, R600 000 will be allocated to donor-advised giving and R200 000 will be used for project expenses. In addition to  its own TB fund, Community Chest distributed R1.7 million to its three TB Partners.

Other guests present at the VIP High Tea were the First Lady Thembeka Mchunu, Dave Guselli, Muthu Murugan together with Judith Makosi, Babu Baijoo, Dr Raj Govender, Kay Makan, previous Executive Director of the Community Chest Aroo Naidoo, businessman Rob Alexander and many others.   If you wish to partner with Community Chest and make a difference to those less fortunate in your community – Contact Angie / Michael at Community Chest 033-3941031
