Chappell was killed by the lioness as she took pictures during a drive through the popular lion park. An eyewitness described how he saw the lion lunge at the American tourist, biting her through the open vehicle window.

Johannesburg Lion Park operational manager Scott Simpson told Fourway’s Review that a witness said they had been driving behind Chappell and her private guide and both of them had their windows open.

“The lion stopped about half a meter away from the vehicle and they were still taking pictures. The lioness then lunged at the vehicle and bit the lady through the window,” said the witness.
