Pietermaritzburg to host 2022 Commonwealth Games cycling

Pietermaritzburg's world-class bike track at Cascades will host the cycling segment of the 2022 Commonwealth Games if Durban wins its bid

Pietermaritzburg will have its share of the 2022 Commonwealth Games should Durban win its bid.

The city has agreed to make its world-class mountain bike park at Cascades available as one of the facilities for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Durban is the only city in the bid for the Games. The decision on where the Games will be held will be made on September 2.

This emerged at Thursday’s Msunduzi executive committee meeting where the eThekwini municipality requested the use of the bike park.

The use of the internationally renowned cycling site, if Durban wins its bid, will have no direct cost to the City of Choice, as all overlays and temporary infrastructure costs will be covered by the organising committee. The track has already played host to the 2015 World MTB Cup.

Msunduzi Mayor Chris Ndlela commended the eThekwini municipality for their approach. He hopes to now negotiate for them to also use the IAAF endorsed athletics stadium next to the Harry Gwala Stadium for the Commonwealth games.

The eThekwini municipality has diversified the venues for the bid proposal showcasing different areas. These include the Moses Mabhida stadium for the opening and closing of the Games, and athletics. The Durban International Convention Centre will be used for indoor sports such as judo, King’s Park for rugby and the Durban Exhibition Centre for netball, as some of the venues.
