Local chefs get the nod at Checkers Hyper cook off

Twenty local chefs donned aprons and high hats to cook up a storm in order to impress the taste buds of a panel of judges including celebrity chef Sherwyn Weaich who was a finalist in 2014’s Braai Master Season 3 and who was placed in the quarter finals of MasterChef SA 2012.Local amateur chefs proved that they can take the heat in the kitchen when they gathered at Brookside Mall last weekend to compete in the inaugural Brookside Mall Checkers Hyper Cook Off and Food Fair

Contestants were judged based on their style/creativity, originality, technique, marketing and most importantly taste.

Duran Reddy took first place position and with that a R6000 Checkers voucher. His spicy braised lamb shank and sweet potato mash took the judges by storm.

“I am surprised at the standard of food produced by all chefs but Duran’s dish was exceptionally good for someone who has no culinary experience,” said Sherwyn Weaich.

Lushel Kisten who is the owner of The Bunny Chow Inn took second place with her original and tasty Mutton curry bunny chow.

Irshad Abdulla was placed third and collected an additional voucher for having the cleanest station.

His prawn, avocado and rocket salad definitely tickled the judge’s taste buds.
