Over the past weekend, dams in the Mgeni catchment system  (Mearns Weir, Spring Grove Dam, Midmar Dam, Albert Falls Dam, Nagle Dam and Inanda Dam)  was recorded.

Upper Mooi catchment (Spring Grove Dam): No rainfall. The level of this dam is currently at 73, 69% while last week it was at 72, 39%. A year ago to the day it was 91, 72%.

Mearns Weir catchment: There was 29mm rainfall. This resulted in this weir reaching a level of 99, 2% from its level of 80, 57% last week. A year ago to the day the level of Mearns was 82, 19%. It must be considered this is a small dam and, therefore, is able to be fill easily and quickly.

Midmar catchment: There was a total of 41mm rainfall over the weekend. However, this has had no positive impact on the level of the dam. The current level of the dam is 46, 89%; last week it was at 46, 94%, and a year ago to the day it was at 72, 64%. Umgeni Water remains concerned at the rate at which this dam is reducing and if water-use curtailments are not implemented immediately and if the expected rains do not come, the dam could reach dead storage by the end of 2016. Dead storage in dams – which vary between 5% and 15% – means that all that is left in a dam is silt, which cannot be treated.

Albert Falls catchment: There was 30mm rainfall over the past weekend. The dam is currently at 37, 64%. Before the rainfall event – the dam was at a level of 37, 76%. A year ago to the day the level of this dam was at 71, 82%. The rainfall received over the week has had no positive impact on the level of the dam.

Nagle Dam catchment: No recorded rainfall over the past weekend. The level of the dam is currently at 83, 69% while last week it had been at 86, 93%. A year ago to the day the level of the dam was at 82, 3%.
