“There will be no aloof councillors”-Njilo

Deputy Tourism Minister Barbara Thompson congratulates newly-elected Msunduzi Mayor Themba Njilo at Friday's first sitting of Msunduzi Council

Delivering his first address as the mayor at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall, Njilo warned fellow councillors against being out of touch with the communities they are meant to serve. “There is nothing disturbing as a councillor who does not know what is happening where they live and the poverty levels that exist in their neighbourhood. We have a mandate from the people, let us not disappoint them,’ said Njilo. He promised a packed city hall that under his leadership the municipality would work to help young entrepreneurs to enter the mainstream economy.  “We know that equality is almost impossible, but what we want is for everyone in this municipality to have a sense of dignity because they are getting better served and have prospects of making ends meet,” said Njilo. He cited youth entrepreneurs as the primary target for the city’s economic growth.
KwaZulu-Natal Finance MEC Belinda Scott said it was important for newly-sworn councillors to familiarize themselves with laws used in local government.  Deputy Tourism Minister Barbara Thompson, Education MEC Mthandeni Dlungwana, leading business figures, traditional leaders and leaders of political parties attended Friday’s inauguration. Scott who earlier attended the inauguration of Richmond Council said it was important for councillors to remember that they are sworn to serve the people.
During the inaugural sitting Executive Committee(Exco)  members were also elected. The new Exco  members are Mayor Themba Njilo, Deputy Mayor Thobani Zuma, Eunice Majola, Philisiwe Sithole, Tholakele Dlamini, Sphamandla Khumalo, Prudence Msimang (all ANC), Nalini Naidoo and Sbongiseni Majola(both DA) and Thinasonke Ntombela IFP.
