Syndicate suspected in mall robbery

SAPS provincial spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said there has been a visible spike in business robberies, not only in Pietermaritzburg but the province at large.
“We are concerned about these robberies that are taking place in the province. We are working hard to check whether these suspects who were arrested are not linked to any other robberies that were taking place in these malls,” she said.
After ransacking the store, the armed robbers fled with an undisclosed amount of electronics (cameras, laptops, and tablets) in a White VW Polo.
Pietermaritzburg South Cluster Police spokesperson Mthokozisi Ngobese praised police officers for courageously braving a hail of in the high speed chase that ensued.
“The flying squad alongside other police patrols followed the vehicle to Umlass road where the police caught up with the suspects who opened fire on them Police responded and shot dead one of the suspects while apprehending another. Three other suspects managed to escape,” said Ngobese.
Gwala said a provincial task team has been put in place to effectively investigate and combat business robberies.
“The team is working tirelessly to put together details that might link business robberies in the province to one common factor, then we can narrow it down to the city,” said Gwala urging business owners to beef up security by upgrading their security systems.
