Missing from the cricket scene for the past three years, the Schools Night League competition was well supported with most of the city schools, including Hilton College, Maritzburg College, St Charles College and the KwaZulu Natal Inland Invitation XI. Michaelhouse did not participate due to prior commitments.

Tournament Director and Coaching Manager at KwaZulu-Natal Cricket: Inland, Yashveer Singh, said the competition was re-introduced in an effort to revive schools cricket, not just on the field, but off the field as well.

“Competitions such as these, will slowly but surely bring the masses in for cricket,” said Singh.

He said the tournament was held over four weeks which saw Hilton College, being coached by former Protea player and English county coach Dale Benkenstein, scoop the title over Maritzburg College.

Singh said plans are in place for the primary schools edition and another high schools edition with more schools participating in November this year and in early 2018.

“KwaZulu-Natal Cricket:Inland has had a complete administrative change in the past 6 months and the new team brings in an innovative and consistent work ethic, striving for excellence to be the best as their current motto,”said Singh.

He said the team was committed to bringing out the best Inland Cricket has to offer; to showcase talent from Inland teams, and provide many local opportunities or the Inland teams.

The organisation is looking at also re-introducing the Nigh League so that they can “grow our much-loved sport and take it to new heights”.
