Customs officials seized more than ten million rand and called upon the services of the Hawks Serious Commercial Crime Unit members to conduct further investigations.

“The suspect was allegedly from Pietermaritzburg on route to the UAE via Cape Town” spokesperson Captain Lloyd Ramovha said.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on today, the 12th of October, to face charges of contravening Sec (15) of the Customs and Exercise Act 91/1994 (failure to declare).

Brigadier Neil Oliver, acting provincial head of the Hawks, stated that their next move is to investigate the paper trail and source of the money.

“Obviously our probe in this will be to determine the trail and origin of the money. We cannot rule out unearthing illicit activities as we go along.”
