SAPS spokesperson Captain Gay Ebrahim said a tip-off received by Crime Intelligence about the heist paid off on Friday morning with police waiting for the suspects to act.

“We received information about two weeks ago of a possible cash-in-transit in the area. The team put their plan into action and lay in wait for the suspects,” said Ebrahim.

She said the action eventually unfolded at about 9.30am on Friday morning when the 10 suspects, allegedly travelling in a white Toyota double cab vehicle approached a G4 security vehicle transporting cash, on the Appelsbosch road in Dalton, KZN.

Caught in action by the Crime Intelligence and National Intervention team, gunfire was exchanged and four suspects were fatally shot. Six other suspects fled the scene on foot, disappearing to a nearby sugarcane field.  One guard in the G4 vehicle was shot in the hand and received treatment at the scene.

” The SAPS team is still on the scene and surrounding areas in pursuit of the suspects who fled,” said Ebrahim.

Police investigations continue.
