For up to three years number five Poinsettia Road has had raw sewage run through the yard completely exposing those living there.
A pipe was installed by the municipality running through the yard to deposit the waste from the yard but Anand Naicker who lives there says that this pipe just deposits the waste outside the yard.
“The pipe is level with the ground and so runs out and actually comes back in sometimes,” said Naicker.
Naicker showed how the pipe was actually left open thus leaving the waste to flow into a ditch resulting in stagnant sewage water outside of the yard.
“A lot of cattle pass through here and stop to drink the sewage water that is outside my yard and I’m sure is a health violation,” said Naicker.
Naicker has said that since he spoke to the media nothing has been done and that responses from the municipality are worse now than ever.
“I just want them to sort this problem out and maybe make a proper catchment area with sewage pumps so that we can have proper sanitation,” pleaded Naicker.
He added that as a result of the incorrect sewer piping, the pressure in his toilet pipes were affected and resulted in an overflow or backflow in his toilet.
Ward 36 councilor Vic Winterbach said that the residents of Poinsettia Road were facing a very real and continuous problem, and despite various attempts to find solutions nothing has lasted.
“Residents in the area bear the brunt of the leaking sewage and every intervention to date by the Water and Sanitation has led to temporary relief only,” said Winterbach.
Winterbach also questioned why the problem could not be permanently fixed.
The municipality did not respond to queries at the time of going to print.
