It is alleged that the teenage mom from Taylor’s Halt was at Home Affairs with her stepmother to get an identity document and birth certificate for the child.
While standing in a lengthy queue, the stepmother decided to leave the young mother and baby to run errands. To her surprise, on return the teenage mom and baby had disappeared without a trace.
Frantic, the stepmother called relatives to make them aware that the pair had gone missing. After trying to call the teenager many times, the young woman eventually responded and said that she had taken the baby to her grandmother’s house in Mpumelelo, France.
According to Alexandra Police Station spokesperson, Captain Kholeka Mhlongo, the teenager made her way to an isolated area behind DUT Riverside campus where she walked down a river bank carrying the six-month-old who was wrapped in a blanket. She then threw the baby into the river.
“After throwing the baby into the river, she confirmed that she waited for the baby to float away before making her way back to her grandmother’s house in Mpumelelo,” said Mhlongo.
Mhlongo added that the motive for the child abandonment was because the teenager felt that the baby was unwanted by her family.
When she arrived at her grandmother’s, she was questioned about the whereabouts of the infant to which she failed to provide answers. The police were called to intervene, leading her confession.
SAPS divers commenced searching at late hours of Tuesday night which folded due to poor visibility. In a second attempt, after a three-hour search, SAPS were successful in locating the lifeless body of the infant.
Captain Mhlongo confirmed that the young mother has been taken into custody facing a charge of murder.
