Fatal crash on the N3

TWO people have been killed in a crash involving a truck and a bakkie on the Pietermaritzburg-bound carriageway of the N3, at the Applesden turn.

During the crash, a truck and its trailer had come to rest down a steep embankment off the N3.

ER24 paramedics, along with other services, arrived on the scene to find both the truck and light motor vehicle on the side of the road at the bottom of an embankment. The light motor vehicle was found partially beneath the bed of the truck. Several trees had collapsed and fallen onto the truck.

The truck involved in the crash was transporting copper plates.

KZN Department of Health’s Emergency Medical Services and several private ambulance services responded to the crash.

Upon inspection, paramedics discovered that two men, one from each vehicle, had sustained numerous, fatal injuries. Unfortunately, nothing could be done for them and they were declared dead.

Two other patients were found on scene by paramedics. The patients were assessed and found with minor to moderate injuries. The patients were stabilised at the scene before being transported to local health institutions for continued medical care.

The exact cause of this specific crash is not known at this stage and is being investigated by the SAPS.
