Brave K9 offi cers commended

The dog unit had responded to a foiled armed robbery at a bakery in Woodlands resulting in a highspeed chase that ended in a cul-de-sac in Mountain Rise’s Elfin Place. After being cornered, the gang emerged from their getaway vehicle, a white VW Polo, with guns blazing, fi ring wildly at the police.
Years of experience, training and professionalism resulted in the police out-gunning the five gangsters, all of whom were shot and arrested.
SAPS management has heaped praise on the police officers for their courage and commitment to
“serve and protect”. The officers involved in the shootout were Warrant Officer Dylan Richardson, Warrant Officer Jay Marian, Warrant Officer
Reeno Dayaram, Constable Zakhele Sithole, Sergeant Gerard Hyppolite and Sergeant Bianca Cantello.

Speaking to Maritzburg Sun yesterday, the officers said they relied on each other and “it was team work” that emerged triumphant
over the criminals.Proving that women are just as tough and courageous as their male counterparts, Sergeant Bianca Cantello, told Maritzburg Sun she could “stand her ground” just as strongly as anyone of her male colleagues.

Cantello, who joined the police force 10 years ago, said she was determined to make a difference in the community.“It has always been my dream
and calling to join the force, plus I am an animal lover so it only made sense for me to join the dog unit,” she said, adding that she was prepared to work extra hard to prove herself to her colleagues.“There are times you feel underestimated as a woman, and you constantly have to stand your ground to prove that your worthyof the same recognition,” added
