Sathy Pather: A life of “be good and do good”

Well-known businessman and jeweller Sathyaseelan (Sathy) Pather passed away over the weekend.
He was the owner of SD Pather Jewellers – a formidable brand and business built on by three generations.
Founded in the 1920’s by Mr AS Pather, who had travelled to South Africa as a jewellery merchant and manufacturer from India, the business grew and soon Daramalingham Pather (AS Pather’s son) joined the business bringing great change with it.
Learning numerous skills from his father, Daramalingam Pather vertically integrated the manufacturing business into retail during the 1940s. It was under Daramalingam Pather that the business flourished and became a well-known respected name throughout Pietermaritzburg. Their first retail store, SD Pather Jewellers, opened in downtown Church Street and had their manufacturing operation running from the back shop and their retail section in the front.
Daramalingam’s eldest son, Sathyaseelan (Sathy) was born in 1952. After matriculating from Raisethorpe High School at the age of 18 years old, Sathy  joined the family business.
Once Sathy joined, he found an opportunity within the diamond trade that allowed him to qualify as a diamond grader.  During that time, under the apartheid government, this was not an easy undertaking for an Indian jeweller.  None the less, he managed to grow the diamond business, which is a staple at SD Pather Jewellers today.
When the Liberty Midlands Mall opened in Pietermaritzburg, Sathy saw an opportunity to further grow the business and increase his footprint within the Pietermaritzburg community. As a result, SD Pather Jewellers has been trading at the mall from its inception in 2003. Sathy further grew the business through manufacturing bespoke custom-made jewellery pieces.
SD Pather Jewellers was built on the philosophy of “Trust is a tradition”. This concept has held true through the generations with SD Pather Jewellers being a trusted household name throughout the Pietermaritzburg community. The SD Pather name has become synonymous with trust, quality and honour. The Pather family has always been involved in the upliftment and betterment of the Indian and greater community at large, supporting local charities  and organisations throughout the years.
Sathy worked alongside his wife of 36 years, Pranitha. It was impossible to walk past the shop without seeing him in the front shop, he loved his business and dutifully went in every day.
Sathy was an empathetic, honest and honourable man. During his youth he was an active anti-apartheid activist, a liberal thinker and believed in the simple philosophy of “ be good, do good”. Sathy treated each person he came across with respect and kindness. He was a truly dignified and humble soul, and has left behind an indelible legacy for his wife Pranitha,  children, Uvitha, Avnitha and Avesh and granddaughters Diya and Sania.
