In just one week, three muggings have been reported having occurred on College Road, Princess Market Drive and West Street.

The high school learner was robbed last Wednesday around 4.15pm while returning from the
school’s cricket field. The unsuspecting cricketer had been approached by the suspect who enquiried about the time. Taking out his cellphone to check the time, the brash robber took this opportunity to pull out a knife and demand the cellphone. He made off into the street with the
stolen phone.

A day later, a 23-year-old woman was robbed at knife point while walking over the Duzi Bridge at around 5pm en route to West Street. The robbers
made away with her purse and J1 Samsung cellphone. On Monday, February 26, a student was robbed going into town, also on the bridge. The brazen
robbers fl ed with the student’s wallet, cellphone and laptop. Individuals walking on the Duzi Bridge, and
Princess Market Drive in Alexandra Park told Maritzburg Sun that they tried to walk in groups when going to town and surrounding sporting facilities,as some areas were isolated.

Lindokuhle Davis, who walks through the Duzi Field to get to the Alexandra Park basketball court said, “There are a number of pathways and overgrown grass hedges in isolated areas which is very scary. I try not to carry any valuable possessions.”
Msunduzi Municipality Spokesperson, Thobeka Mafumbatha, said the robberies were of concern since the incidents were occurring in the City’s top
recreational area.
“The Duzi River is a city jewel with various activities happening. It therefore needs to be a safe place so people who participate in their sporting routines won’t be harmed,” said Mafumbatha.

in the area,” said Mhlongo. She confirmed that cases of common robbery were being investigated.
