Maritzburg United visits Alexandra High

Maritzburg United Coach, Fadlu Davids and the team at Alexandra High School yesterday for a motivational talk with the schools’s first soccer team.

Team of Choice Maritzburg United has taken the initiative to visit schools in Pietermaritzburg to coach budding soccer stars. Alexandra High School, one of the schools chosen, has an aspiring first
team coached by Francis Armitage who is also a mathematics teacher. He said, “It is a fantastic initiative by the United team and the learners are really excited for such an opportunity. “The first team understands that there must be a balance between their attitude and behaviour. It is a privilege for
them to be in the first team and they are role models for the others who want to pursue a career in sports and excel in school.” Five of the members of Maritzburg United who attended shared words of wisdom
with the learners and told them of their experiences as young soccer players and the importance of staying in school, being disciplined and staying away from drugs. Bandile Shandu and Siphesihle Ndlovu, who both began as ball boys for Maritzburg United, are examples that anything is possible if you are dedicated towards your goals. Principal of Alexandra High, Anusha Pillay, was delighted to host the team at her school. She said, “As a school, it is important to embrace a team which supports its community. A local team which visits scholars and provides inspiration to latent talent schools gives hope to aspiring soccer stars that could also play for a team like Maritzburg United.” The event was a
success as the team members coached the under 16 and under 19 scholars who were eager to learn skills from professionals. Maritzburg United coach, Fadlu David, expressed the importance of education even though one may be  more passionate to play sports. He said, “Take education seriously, then football can come after. Wake up every day with determination to achieve a goal and, if you want to be involved in
soccer then you have to work hard every day.” Maritzburg United will be playing in the Nedbank Cup
Quarter Final on Saturday, March 31, at the Harry Gwala Stadium at 3.30pm.
