Speaking to Maritzburg Sun police spokesman Sergeant Mthokozisi Ngobese confirmed that detectives are investigating five cases of murder and a case of arson.
Two local security groups also confirmed to Maritzburg Sun the indication that a sinister agenda was behind the horrific deaths of the five family members.
Sunil Beharie of Sector Four Community Watch who was at the scene said in the hours prior to the deadly blaze there was a report of an altercation near the property.
“There was an altercation that took place outside the house prior to the fire,” he stated.
According to Radley Govender of RZS Protection Services, also at the scene of the tragedy, there was evidence of foul play.
“We attended the scene of the fire and there is evidence of foul play but at this stage I cannot reveal the evidence we have. We do not want to hamper the investigation,” said Govender.
Meanwhile, police have refuted reports published in other media, of a robbery prior to the blaze.
According to Colonel Thulani Zwane there was no robbery as reported by other media.
“There was no robbery reported but only a fire to which emergency personnel responded to immediately,” he said.
The 3.30am blaze at the family’s home in Larch Road situated at ‘The Village’ a small community between Mountain Rise and Manor, killed five members of the Munjra family. The family is survived by their eldest daughter who lives in Johannesburg.
The bodies of the Munjra family were taken to the mortuary for postmortems and will be released to the family for burial arrangements.
