Notorious Scottsville gang nabbed

Relived residents and students are now hoping that the arrests will quell the spate of armed robberies that has plagued the neighbourhood.
For months now, residents and students have been tormented by robbers in a white VW Jetta 3 that has been involved in armed robberies in the area.

A joint effort by the SAPS Alex Task Team, SAPS Highway Patrol members, security companies and community members led to the arrests.
Alexandra Police Station spokesperson, Captain Kholeka Mhlongo, said the suspects aged between 25 and 39 have been linked to several armed robberies in the Scottsville area, and UKZN precinct.
“The suspects robbed students of their cell phones, jewellery, laptops and cash at gunpoint,” said Mhlongo.

One of the suspects was found with an unlicensed firearm and 8 live ammunition that was stolen in Winterton in 2011.
“Upon their arrest, a number of cell phones, cash, various cards and other items were recovered belonging to the victims who had reported their items missing,” said Mhlongo.

Mhlongo emphasised that the arrest was due to team work to eradicate crime. “It shows that when we work together, we achieve a lot. This is a huge success for Alex SAPS as robbery cases have been on the increase lately and are becoming a problem especially in the Scottsville area,” she said.

All four suspects appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Marcia Boikhutso and were remanded in custody. They will appear in court again on Friday.

Students who spoke to Maritzburg Sun said the four men would approach and hold-up the students and use the vehicle as their get-away car.
The gang of four have subsequently been linked to 10 other robbery cases, where the same modus operandi was used.

Maritzburg Sun previously reported that a student was held at gunpoint and robbed of his iPhone.

The gadget was later recovered in the Dambuza area, together with a stolen firearm and counterfeit money.
