Oyster Box scoops Royal carcass champs

The champion in the lamb category, a White Dorper, bred by Gert Lotter sold at R180 per kg; while the champion in the beef category, a Bonsmara, bred by the Vryburg Beef Study Group, sold at R70 per kg and in the pork category a PIC bred on NHELC Farm sold at R60 per kg.
The 2018 Royal Show carcass competition was held last Tuesday and saw buyers bidding for the country’s top carcasses. Now in its 27th year, and having set three national and one international record, the occasion is acknowledged by breeders and buyers alike, to be a premier event on the South African Red Meat calendar. The competition continues to grow in terms of eliciting national interest, and this year’s event drew entries from as far afield as Williston and Barkley East.

The occasion also saw a healthy entry from six farmers from North West province, who teamed up under the name of the Vryburg Beef Study Group. Amazingly, they walked away with every major accolade in the bovine section, the first occasion in 22 years where a single breeding entity achieved this result.
One hundred and seventy cattle, 133 lambs and 128 pigs (48 from emerging and 80 from commercial breeders were entered). Once again all three champion carcasses were purchased by the Oyster Box Hotel, the culinary excellence of which is nationally acknowledged. Following a break of four years, Brandon Leer, acknowledged to be one of South Africa’s top auctioneers, returned to oversee the event. Viewed against the guaranteed ruling prices of R47 per kg for beef, R71 per kg lamb and 18 per kg for pork, the auction saw relatively good prices being obtained in the case of lamb and pork, while that of beef remained subdued.
