Newspaper punished for tough stance against corruption

However, despite the municipality’s heavy-handed approach, Capital Newspapers continued to expose high-level wrong-doing at the municipality and to lobby government and political decision makers to take action.
Maritzburg Sun, Public Eye and Msunduzi Eyethu all exposed the alleged corruption at the municipality, including being the first media house in the city to report on the notorious audio-clips purportedly of city manager Sizwe Hadebe meddling in tender and employment processes.
“As the largest circulating newspaper group in greater Pietermaritzburg, we were not intimidated by certain city officials who used financial extortion to try and gag us as the media. Administrative malfeasance has resulted in near bankruptcy for the city and the collapse of service delivery. There is chaos in every single municipal department. The CBD is in a state of crisis and there is no business confidence, let alone any investment and job creation. We welcome Minister Zweli Mkhize’s intervention and the full council’s decision to suspend the municipal manager,” said Capital Newspaper’s managing director, Riquadeu Jacobs.
