Plenty of local school interest for Durban Heat in MSLT20
As the inaugural Mzansi Super League fast approaches, the Durban Heat has a number of players who came through the ranks of a variety of KwaZulu-Natal schools, and given the staunch school’s rivalry amongst boys in the province these schools will be standing by their old boys.
The Heat’s marquee local player Hashim Amla was schooled on the Berea at the famous Durban High School. Amla’s Alma Mater has also produced Proteas like Lance Klusener, Trevor Goddard and Barry Richards. Amla has become one of the legends of the game in South Africa and is expected to lead the batting of the Durban Heat.
Across the N2 and the biggest rival to DHS is Glenwood High School. Glenwood old boy and rookie of the Durban Heat Okuhle Cele will be flying the flag for the Green Machine. In the suburb of Durban North is Northwood High School and that was home to Proteas spinner Keshav Maharaj for his high school years.
Hollywoodbets Dolphins captain Khaya Zondo went to Westville Boys for his high school career. Zondo has begun to make a mark on the international scene but will be hoping that the MSL can get his T20 credentials noticed. In Botha’s Hill lies Kearsney College, the high school of former Protea and Durban Heat seamer Kyle Abbott.
In Pietermaritzburg, a hub for schooling excellence in the province, two players spent their years of education at Maritzburg College and St Charles College respectively.
Dave Miller, one of the most devastating limited overs cricketers in the world, was schooled at College and will form a vital cog in the Heat’s batting line up for the MSL.
SJ Erwee was schooled at St Charles College. The left-handed batsman was a top performing cricketer at the school and his recent call up to the SA ‘A’ team for their winter tour to India was a step in the right direction.
A strong top-order batsman, if Erwee gets in the Heat will be well on top.
